New York City: On Wednesday, May 23rd, the State University of New York Board of Trustees' Committee on Charter Schools, along with the SUNY Charter Schools Institute, held the first ever Charter Renewal Recognition Ceremony honoring nine SUNY authorized charter schools that have received the highest renewal recommendation the Trustees can bestow: a full-term, five-year renewal without conditions. The Ceremony was held at the SUNY College of Optometry campus following the Committee's regularly scheduled meeting. Seven of the honored schools are located in the New York City/Long Island area and two are located in Buffalo. Click here for full Press Release.

Notably, this year's 12th graders represent the first high school graduating class of any SUNY authorized charter school. Every member of that graduating class has been accepted to college. Carl C. Icahn Charter School in the Bronx serves 280 students in grades K-7 and will grow to offer grades K-8 next year. The school has a wait list of over 700 students for next year. Icahn has significantly outperformed its local district on the state’s ELA and math exams last year; success recently featured in an in-depth profile by New York Voices.

Child Development Center of the Hamptons Charter School, located in Wainscott, serves 65 students in grades K-8. The school serves the largest number of students with disabilities of any charter school in the state. The SUNY Trustees voted at their May meeting to allow the school to expand its program to serve those currently enrolled students over the summer that require an extended school year program.

Community Partnership Charter School, located in Brooklyn, serves 288 students in grades K-5. The school continues to show strong progress on state test scores and is a stand-out in the local community, with a waiting list of over 400 students for next year.

Harbor Science and Arts Charter School, located in Manhattan, serves 210 students in grades 1-8. Harbor’s five-year renewal was achieved following a short-term renewal, granted to allow the school time to build on the successes in its fourth year of operation. In 2005-06 Harbor students outperformed their peers in local Community School District 4 in English Language Arts (68% vs. 41%) and in Mathematics (74% vs. 49%).

Our World Neighborhood Charter School, located in Queens, serves 670 students in grades K-8. At the time of its renewal visit, Institute staff noted significant parent satisfaction and positive growth as the school successfully made the significant transition to self-management.

Sisulu-Walker Charter School of Harlem serves 241 students in grades K-3. They will offer instruction in grades 1-4 next year. In the tradition of the school’s namesakes, Sisulu-Walker has distinguished itself by engaging students in service learning projects as part of its core academic program. The school has a wait-list of over 500 students for next year.

South Buffalo Charter School serves 641 students in grades K-8. At the time of the renewal visit, Institute staff noted the school had a ninety percent retention rate indicating a high parent satisfaction rate. This satisfaction was reflected in the school’s request to add an additional Kindergarten class to meet growing parent demand.
