New Analysis: SUNY-Authorized Charter Schools Shine on Statewide Assessments
Charter schools authorized by the State University of New York (SUNY) Board of Trustees continue to shine on New York State English Language Arts (ELA) and Math assessments, according to a new analysis of state data by the SUNY Charter Schools Institute.
Across the portfolio, SUNY-authorized charter schools achieved an average proficiency rate of 66% in Math and 58% in ELA, exceeding the statewide averages by 13 and 11 percentage points, respectively. Additionally, 15 SUNY charter schools ranked among the top 25 public schools statewide in math, while 7 schools did so in ELA. Locally, 83% of SUNY charter schools outperformed their district of location in Math, and 84% exceeded their district’s performance in ELA.
Within New York City, SUNY charters performed impressively across most boroughs, except for Staten Island, where SUNY authorizes only one charter school with significantly different demographics compared to the local district.

Success Academy continues to set the standard for academic excellence. All 31 Success Academy schools with testing grades achieved math proficiency rates of 89% or higher, while 19 schools reached 80% or higher in ELA. Several community-based schools and smaller networks also delivered outstanding performance. Notable among them are Bronx Excellence Schools, Brooklyn Prospect Schools, Central Queens Academy, Harlem Village Academy Charter Schools, Icahn Charter Schools, and Zeta Charter Schools.
