Harlem Village Academy East Charter School

First Notice – The SUNY Trustees have received the following revision application:

Harlem Village Academy East Charter School, located at 2351 First Avenue, New York, NY 10035 and 35 West 124th Street, New York, NY 10027 in Community School Districts (“CSD”) 4 and 5, respectively, seeks to merge with Harlem Village Academy West Charter School, an education corporation with the authority to operate Harlem Village Academy West Charter School and Harlem Village Academy West 2 Charter School, located at 74 West 124th Street, New York, NY 10027, 132 West 124th Street, New York, NY 10027, 244 West 144th Street, New York, NY 10030, and 35 West 124th Street, New York, NY 10027 in CSDs 3 and 5, such that when the merger is approved, Harlem Village Academy West Charter School would be the successor education corporation under the proposed name “Harlem Village Academies Charter Schools.”  The proposed merger also requests the following charter school name and enrollment revisions:

  • Harlem Village Academy East Charter School is chartered to serve 634 students in grades K-12 for the 2023-24 school year and 527 students in grades K-12 for the 2027-28 school year, the final year of the current charter term.  The school requests to serve 388 students in grades K-8 and growing to serve 432 students in grades K-8 by the 2027-28 school year. The school requests for its name to remain the same.
  • Harlem Village Academy West Charter School is chartered to serve 661 students in grades K-12 and growing to serve 764 students in grades K-12 for the 2027-28 school year, the final year of the current charter term.  The school requests to serve 482 students in grades 5-12 for the 2024-25 school year and growing to serve 692 students in grades K-1 and 5-12 by the 2027-28 school year.  The school requests to be renamed “Harlem Village Academy North Charter School.”
  • Harlem Village Academy West 2 Charter School is chartered to serve 300 students in grades K-5 for the 2023-24 school year and 295 students in grades K-5 for the 2027-28 school year, the final year of the current charter term.  The school requests to serve 550 students in grades K-4 for the 2024-25 school year and growing to serve 590 students in grades K-4 for the 2027-28 school year.  The school requests to be renamed “Harlem Village Academy West Charter School.”

University Prep Public Charter Schools, an education corporation operating more than one charter, sought to renew its charter for five years as well as its authority to operate the following charter schools:

  • University Prep Charter High School is located at 600 Ann’s Avenue, Bronx, NY 10455, in CSD 7 and chartered to serve 450 students in grades 9-12 for the 2023-24 school year, the final year of the current charter term. The school sought a five-year renewal of the charter commencing August 1, 2024. According to the renewal application, the school will continue to serve 450 students in grades 9- 12.
  • University Prep Charter Middle School is located at 470 Jackson Avenue, Bronx, NY 10455, in CSD 7 and chartered to serve 496 students in grades 5-8 for the 2023- 24 school year, the final year of the current charter term. The school sought a five-year renewal of the charter commencing August 1, 2024. According to the renewal application, the school will expand to serve 900 students in grades K-8.

The SUNY Trustees: 1) received the renewal applications on or about March 17, 2023, and 2) approved the renewals on October 12, 2023.

  • Brownsville Collegiate Charter School is located at 364 Sackman Street, Brooklyn, NY 11212, in CSD 23 and chartered to serve 85 students in grades 6-8 for the 2023-24 school year, the final year of the current charter term. The school sought a two-year renewal of the charter commencing August 1, 2024, to align its charter with other schools under the education corporation. According to the renewal application, the school will serve 220 students in grades K-4.
  • Excellence Boys Charter School of Bedford Stuyvesant is located at 225 Patchen Avenue, Brooklyn, NY 11233, in CSD 16 and chartered to serve 780 students in grades K-8 for the 2023-24 school year, the final year of the current charter term. The school sought a two-year renewal of the charter commencing August 1, 2024, to align its charter with other schools under the education According to the renewal application, the school will serve 412 students in grades K-8.
  • Excellence Girls Charter School is located at 794 Monroe Street, Brooklyn, NY 11233, 1600 Park Place, Brooklyn, NY 11233, and 1485 Pacific Street, Brooklyn, NY 11216, in CSDs 16 and 17 and chartered to serve 1,585 students in grades K- 12 for the 2023-24 school year, the final year of the current charter term. The school sought a two-year renewal of the charter commencing August 1, 2024, to align its charter with other schools under the education corporation. According to the renewal application, the school will serve 870 students in grades K-12.

The SUNY Trustees: 1) received the renewal applications on or about March 17, 2023; and 2) approved the renewals on October 12, 2023.
